RAIN or SHINE
Traditions of springtime festivals reach back to ancient times in many cultures, and one such tradition is the Maypole, decorated with ribbons of many colors wound around the pole in a pattern to bring people together in the spirit of community and cooperation through dance. Winding the Maypole is traditionally accompanied by Morris dancers with their bells and hankies to help wake up the earth, and group singing to greet the rising Sun and celebrate the return of Spring to the land. Newtowne Morris has been hosting a Maypole event every May First for over fifty years, keeping the ancient traditions alive in the busy modern world.
The event occurs every May First, rain or shine, starting the first stand at sunrise, or approximately 5:30 AM, near Harvard Square, on the Cambridge bank of the Charles River adjacent to the Weeks Footbridge. After a few Morris dances we encourage everybody to take part in the Maypole winding, singing (song books are provided), and a country dance for all who will. Once the sun has risen the group walks to the lawn between Dunster Street and Holyoke Street for the second stand (construction permitting) at about 7:00 AM for more Morris dancing, another Maypole winding, and singing the Te Deum carol. A final short stroll down Winthrop Street ends next to Winthrop Park for the third stand with a few last dances and songs starting about 8:00 AM.
